About Japan Pet Drug

Japan Pet Drug was founded over a hundred years ago in Japan. JPD in its original form were breeders of Koi and ornamental fish. Over the years, they diversified and began to produce food for their fish, and other products. Now they have a complete catalog of items they produce in, and for the Japanese hobbyist.

JPD Foods are without parallel in Japan. Japanese hobbyists favor the JPD diets over all others in Japan, including Hikari. In Japan, Hikari is number one in overall sales, but to the Koi hobbyist, there is no equal to the JPD diets.

In Europe, and specifically in England, the JPD diet Medicarp is so popular that at one time, I (Dr. Johnson) thought the food might be a UK product.

JPD incorporates the talent of Dr. Shibata, who was important in the work on the new hole disease which appeared in Japan in 1996-97. When Mie University determined their was a virus involved, JPD got interested. When Mie University showed that the virus only attacked when conditions and nutrition was poor, JPD acted. Over twenty diet protoypes later, they finally had a diet which SIGNIFICANTLY reduced (almost eliminated) morbidity and mortality from the virus which caused hole in the side in Japan.

That diet contained all the known immuno stimulants, Lactoferrin perhaps is the most important one. Lactoferrin is an important component in 'mother's milk' but more importantly, in the initial, immune supportive 'colostrum' - and when given to animals including fish, it is an immense boost to the immune system.
